The $14 paintbrush that made me slow down my dig grid

For years I used whatever brush came in the toolkit, just swiping dirt off pottery like I was dusting a shelf. Then last month at a site outside Santa Fe, this old timer handed me a cheap boar bristle brush and said "feel the difference before you touch the clay." I switched to that $14 brush for the fine layers, and it changed how I expose the edges of a rim without scratching it. Now I have three of them in different stiffness levels, one for dust, one for roots, one for the final reveal. Anyone else have a simple tool that forced them to work slower on purpose?

That brush trick is just half the story though. The real game changer is learning to tell the difference between root pressure and clay moisture by feel, which no brush can teach you.
