Showerthought: my trowel handle snapped on a dig near Tucson and the museum label outlived the tool
Was brushing dirt off a sherd last Tuesday at a site outside Tucson when my trowel handle just snapped in half. It was a cheap wooden one I got for maybe 12 bucks, and the metal tang came right out of the handle mid scrape. I switched to a butter knife from my lunch bag for the rest of the afternoon and honestly it worked fine on the soft dirt. Makes me wonder how many tools in museum collections are just random stuff people grabbed when their real gear broke. Anyone else have a field tool quit on them at the worst possible moment and end up improvising?
Curious what the museum label actually says on it. Like do they list it as a trowel or just "metal tool fragment"? Because if the label outlasted the tool, seems like they'd have to describe the broken thing somehow.
