Comparing aerial photos with old maps blew my mind on a site near Dayton

I was looking at a farm field outside Dayton where I thought there was nothing from the 1800s. Pulled up some lidar data and compared it to an 1874 plat map at the county library. The map showed a house and barn right where I saw a weird mound in the aerial. Went out last weekend and found brick fragments, a well cap, and some rusty horseshoes in a 50 foot radius. The map was dead on accurate for the location of the foundations. Has anyone else had good luck cross-referencing old plats with modern elevation data?

Ha! Yeah, did that once and found a whole forgotten tavern foundation.

Make sure you fill in any holes before someone falls through at night.
