Went from spikes every climb to almost never, what changed my mind

I used to spike every oak and maple I climbed, even for pruning work. Then a homeowner in Austin watched me put 20 holes in a 60 year old live oak and asked if I was sure that was good for the tree. Now I only spike when the tree is coming down or fully dead, and I use a flip line and footlock for everything else. Anyone else make that switch after a customer called them out?

Same thing happened to me with a live oak, flip line changed everything.
