Watched a guy spike a 90 ft oak in Sandusky without a single tie in, and it scared me straight on my own climbing
I was up in Sandusky last month helping a buddy clear some storm damage off a job site, and there was this older climber named Dale working the big oak next door. He went up 90 ft of dead ash with zero deadwooding, no second tie in, just free climbed the whole thing and topped it out like it was nothing. I stood there with my coffee watching him and my stomach was in knots the entire time. He made it down fine, shook my hand, and told me he's been doing it 30 years and never had a problem. Here is the thing though, I have been climbing 12 years and I have gotten lazy about tie ins on easy removals more than once. Watching Dale made me realize that 30 years of no problems is just luck stacking up, not skill. I went out the next day and bought a second flip line and a chest harness so I stop cutting that corner. Dale's still out there climbing though, and I do not know how to feel about that. Anyone else had a close call watching somebody else's bad habit before it caught up to them?
