The oak off Route 9 in Bennington got cabled in the 80s and it's still holding
I did a consult at a farm property outside Bennington last month and the owner pointed me toward a big white oak with old steel cables running through the crown. The cables were installed sometime in the mid 80s based on the hardware, and the bark has mostly grown over the eye bolts, which you don't see much anymore. Does anyone still spec steel over the newer synthetic systems for long term installs like this, or are you mostly swapping them out when you find them?
Are you replacing them or just leaving them be? I'd swap those old cables for a synthetic system since the hardware is already grown over and hard to check. Steel was fine back then but the new stuff lasts longer and is easier to inspect.
