Heard a guy at the supply yard say 'prune for the tree, not for your truck' and it stuck with me
Was picking up a load of mulch in Sacramento a couple weeks back and some old climber was talking to a new guy about why he leaves lower branches on street trees even when the homeowner complains. He went on about how the tree needs that sapwood to handle the heat and how clearing it all out just makes a weaker tree that fails in 10 years. I get the biology side of it, but now I'm second guessing every canopy lift I do on mature oaks, so how do you all explain that tradeoff to clients who just want everything cut up to 20 feet?
