The debate over factory vs aftermarket dryer thermostats after a house fire in Akron
I was fixing a dryer in Akron last month, old GE model, and a guy told me he only uses OEM parts after a cheap aftermarket thermostat caused a fire in his neighbor's place. On the other hand, half the guys in my shop swear by aftermarket ones since they're half the price and usually work fine. What's your rule on this? Do you stick with factory parts for safety or go with the cheaper stuff?

Yeah exactly, an extra ten bucks beats worrying every time that thing kicks on.

honestly i used to tell people it doesnt matter as long as the specs match, but after reading about that akron fire i started paying more attention lol. now i just go with oem for thermostats and other safety parts because saving a few bucks isnt worth worrying about my customers' homes, you know. the peace of mind alone makes up for the extra cost.

victor_butler50 nailed it with that peace of mind thing, and honestly I've never met a customer who complained about paying a little extra for oem knowing it actually works right. A burnt house is way heavier of a price tag than ten bucks.
