Watched a landlord in Denver hand 3 couples the same application packet, so now I do one weird thing before I sign anything
I was at an open house for a 1 bedroom in Capitol Hill back in March, and the landlord was this older guy who kept telling everyone how many people wanted the place. I stuck around after most people left, just killing time, and watched him hand the same application packet to 3 different couples. Same unit. He told each one the rent was $1,450, but I heard him tell one guy $1,395 when nobody else was close enough to hear. I did not say anything, I just left, and on the drive home I started writing down every number and promise a landlord says out loud. Now before I apply anywhere, I save the listing page and any texts, and I ask for the rent and fees in writing before I hand over a single dollar. Saved me $200 in junk fees on a place in Aurora two months later. Has anyone else caught a landlord quoting different prices to different people at the same showing?

This is the same move car dealers pull when they quote you one price in the ad and another at the desk, and it works because most people feel awkward pushing back. Writing stuff down flips that, since now you have proof and they know you have it. I started doing the same thing with contractors after a guy gave me two different quotes for the same job, and it has saved me real money too.
