Almost signed a lease in Riverside with a $75 application fee that was never refundable
Back in March I toured a duplex in Riverside and the guy running the showing pushed hard for me to apply that same day, saying there were two other apps coming in. I paid the $75 fee, then read the fine print and saw it was non refundable even if I got denied, which is illegal in California. I called the state rent board and they confirmed the guy owed me the money back, and after two weeks of emails he mailed me a check. Now I ask for the fee policy in writing before I hand over anything, and I snap a photo of every application page. Has anyone else run into a landlord who tried that same move?
