Visited a local anime convention last weekend and noticed something odd about the discussion panels
I went to Anime Central in Chicago on Saturday and sat in on four different discussion panels. Two of them had the same topic - something about the best mecha shows of the 90s. But the weird thing was that each panel had a completely different set of people arguing totally opposite points. One group said Gundam Wing was the best, the other group said it was overrated and Evangelion was better. Nobody in either panel would budge an inch on their opinions. Has anyone else noticed how these discussion panels sometimes feel like two different conversations happening at the same convention?

And the thing is both groups are kind of right but for different reasons. Evangelion broke the mecha genre in a way Gundam Wing never tried to. Gundam Wing was pure spectacle with the whole "five Gundams drop from space" thing. But neither panel would even admit the other show had any merit at all. That's the problem with these fan debates. People treat their favorite show like it's their identity instead of just a show they liked as a teenager.
