Pro tip: I gave up on my CRT's wavy picture and then a $6 part fixed it in ten minutes
Last Saturday I was in my basement with my old 13 inch CRT, getting ready to play some Game Boy games through a Super Game Boy, and the picture kept waving and bending at the top of the screen like heat off a road. I figured the tube was dying and started looking at replacement sets on marketplace, which felt dumb since most of them are 45 minutes away and heavier than my dog. Before I gave up I opened the back and poked around with a plastic stick, and the wavy picture got way worse whenever I touched one little capacitor near the power section. I ordered a pack of replacement caps for six dollars, swapped the one that looked puffy, and the picture has been dead steady for three nights now. I had sort of believed that old TVs were just meant to slowly die and you lived with it, but that was mostly me not wanting to poke around inside something with a big warning sticker on it. Anyone else fix a wavy tube with a single cap, or did yours turn out to be something else?
