Found out my 1987 Game Boy still boots on the original battery tab, and I feel like I cheated myself out of years of repairs
I opened up a beat up Game Boy I got at a garage sale in Reno for $15 and the battery contacts still had that factory bend, no corrosion at all. According to a repair log I found on an old forum, Nintendo rated those contact springs for about 10,000 insertions, which is way more than any kid would ever do. Meanwhile I spent $40 on a cleaning kit and a tri wing screwdriver for nothing. The thing about old handhelds is the plastic shell cracks before the electronics ever give out, so the real fix is usually just a new shell and a good screen. I think we baby these consoles way too much and miss the point that they were built to survive a backpack. Has anyone else opened a retro handheld expecting a mess and found it basically factory fresh inside?
