My lab guy told me he dumps fixer after 8 rolls no matter what, and I finally get why
I was at my local lab in Tucson last month dropping off color rolls and the owner mentioned he mixes fresh fixer every 8 rolls instead of testing it with a clip. I always thought that was wasteful until he showed me a batch of negs from a guy who pushed his fixer to 30 rolls, and the highlights were stained brown and ghosty. Testing with a clip strip only tells you if the fixer still works at that moment, it does not tell you how close it is to dying mid-roll. He said 8 rolls costs him about $3 in chemicals, way less than reshooting a wedding. Has anyone else switched to just dumping fixer on a set count instead of testing it?
