Check your film fridge before shooting, I lost a whole roll of Portra to a bad seal
Last weekend I pulled a roll of 35mm from my fridge that I'd loaded back in March, shot 36 frames at a family thing in Cincinnati, and when I developed it Tuesday night everything came out blank. The rubber gasket on my mini fridge had rotted out and moisture got in, so the film was fogged before I ever hit the shutter. Anyone else ever had a fridge mishap ruin stock, or am I the only one cheap enough to skip a proper film safe?
Man, that sucks... but honestly it reminds me of the time I found a roll of Tri-X in my glovebox that had been there since like 2017. I was so pumped to shoot it at this punk show, figured heat couldn't hurt it that much. Developed it and every frame had this weird orange splotch pattern, looked like the film had been marinating in somebody's old coffee. Turns out my car's AC drain had clogged and leaked water right into the door pocket where I kept it. The seal thing is rough though, cause you think you're doing the right thing keeping it cold. I've got a few rolls of Portra that just live in a Tupperware with a handful of those silica gel packets now, feels dumb but beats losing a whole day of shooting. Honestly half the battle is just remembering which stash you grabbed from six months ago and how it was stored.
