My kid changed the ending of Charlotte's Web and honestly it fixed the book for me
So my 7 year old has been making me read Charlotte's Web out loud every night for like 2 weeks now, and when we got to the part where Charlotte dies he just shut the book and goes nope, she goes to the vet instead. I laughed at first but then I could not stop thinking about it, because the whole book is about how Wilbur gets saved by someone who does not get saved herself. So we rewrote it together. In our version Charlotte survives the winter in a little jar on the kitchen windowsill, and Wilbur has to figure out how to be the one who takes care of her for a change. The weird thing is that version is way harder and way better than the original, which just kind of ends once Wilbur is safe. Now I want to try this with other books where the author takes the easy way out. What book would get way better if you swapped which character has to live with the ending?
