My coworker's take on The Matrix made me rewrite the ending in my head
So last Tuesday in the break room, my coworker Dave said the real ending of The Matrix should have been Neo waking up in a pod again, like it was all a simulation within a simulation. At first I laughed it off, but then I spent the whole drive home thinking about it. It's such a dark twist but it fits the whole 'how deep does the rabbit hole go' theme way better than the calm sunrise scene. I told my buddy Marcus about it and he said it would ruin the hope factor, but honestly that's exactly why I love it, it makes the machines feel truly unbeatable. Has anyone else ever had a friend pitch an alternate ending that just stuck with you for days, even if you originally thought it was dumb?

Shook my head so hard reading this cause Dave just casually dropped one of the darkest endings ever like it was nothing. That pod idea is messed up but it honestly makes so much sense with how the whole movie plays with layers of reality. The sunrise scene always felt a bit too clean to me, like the machines just gave up after one dude showed up. If they pulled that twist where Neo wakes up again, it would hit way harder and make you question everything about the trilogy. Your buddy Marcus is wrong about hope, real hope is fighting even when you know the odds are stacked forever against you. I still think about that alternate ending every time I rewatch the first film now, so thanks for that Dave.
