Hot take: the alt ending where the shark just leaves is the only one that works for me
I watched Jaws again on a rainy Sunday and noticed something weird in how I react to the ending now versus when I was a kid. Back then the exploding tank felt like a win, but this time it just felt loud and fake, so I started wondering what the movie looks like if the shark simply gets full and swims off. Does an ending where the threat just loses interest count as a real ending, or does a story need a big finish to feel done?
Rewatching it as an adult changes everything because you start noticing how much the movie is actually about men failing to deal with the shark, not the shark itself. Brody, Quint, and Hooper are all kinda bad at their jobs in different ways and the shark is almost like a force of nature that punishes that. So an ending where it just swims off actually fits that read better, since the whole point is that you can't beat it, you can only survive it. The exploding tank is a movie moment, but the leaving ending is the real one hiding underneath.
