Old house retrofit, wires are all tangled and no labels. What's your method?

Honestly, my buddy color-coded all the wires with tape.

Color-coding wires with tape? My friend did that in his garage. He spent hours on it and then realized he used the same color twice for different things. Total waste of an afternoon.
