A ramp guy in Tulsa told me he tags every loose panel screw with a paint pen, and I can't stop thinking about it
I was doing a turn in Tulsa a few weeks back and got talking to one of the ramp guys while we waited on fuel. He pulled a little paint pen out of his vest pocket and showed me how he marks the head of every fastener he loosens on a panel, one dot for each screw that came out. He said it started after he watched a crew lose a screw inside a wing root and spend two hours with a borescope hunting for it. I've been wrenching for nine years and I'd never thought about it, I just drop them in a cup and hope for the best. Since then I've been trying it on my own inspections and it's honestly cut down the panic when I get called away mid job. The dots tell me right away which screws are still out and which panel they came from. My lead thinks it's overkill but I caught a missing screw last Thursday that I would have never noticed otherwise. Anybody else marking hardware like this, or am I about to be the weird guy with paint pens in every pocket?
