Blew $340 on an AI stock picking bot and it did worse than my dumb index fund
I kept seeing ads for this AI trading tool that promised to beat the market, so 4 months ago I finally caved and paid $340 for a year. For the first few weeks it looked smart, but by month 3 it had me down about 11% while my boring index fund was up 4%. I thought the AI was analyzing real signals, but turns out it was mostly just chasing whatever was already hot and buying the top. Canceled it last Tuesday and moved what was left back to my normal account. Has anyone actually found an AI investing tool that doesn't just repackage basic trends?
Check whether the bot was even picking stocks or just mirroring an ETF. A lot of these tools run on public momentum data, so when everyone's piling into the same seven tech names, the bot "discovers" them right at the peak. It's not dumb, it's just late. Same thing happens with those copy trading apps, you get in after the guy already made his money. The real trick is that most of these services make more from subscriptions than from returns, so the goal is keeping you hooked, not beating the S&P. You'd probably do better tracking insider filings yourself for free.
