Got called out for my sloppy film loading technique

Forget the leader length, check your take-up spool tension. A loose wind from the start lets the film canister rattle inside the body, which is a sure way to get those weird, wavy edge fog lines that look nothing like a typical light leak. I ruined three rolls of Portra before an old timer at a swap meet spotted my floppy advance lever and showed me how to feel for proper resistance.

Vent: Figuring out a stuck track pin on a cold morning

Oh man, that sounds so stressful! I totally get the worry about starting a bigger problem, like @burns.patricia said, those cold morning fixes were a real adventure. You just had to work with what you had in the truck back then. It's wild how much safer and easier the tools are now, but sometimes you just needed the machine moving right then.

Visiting my aunt in Charleston, I saw her silver napkin rings in a bowl of water

That trick works like magic on old silver spoons too.

Who do you use for mortgages/refi?

Yeah, that "NoTouch credit system" Keith mentioned is a game changer (it saved me so much stress). I felt totally lost too, and having someone else do that shopping was a lifesaver.

Hot take: My mom's 'just eyeball it' approach to her soup recipe is frustrating when I try to teach my kids, but she says that's how you learn - thoughts?

My home ec teacher in high school always drilled into us that recipes are just guidelines. She said the REAL skill is knowing how to adjust based on what you're tasting and seeing. So when I try to write down my mom's stew, I give my kids the basic amounts but tell them the MAGIC is in the tweaks. That guesswork they complain about? It's actually building their confidence to cook without FEAR. Like simonsingh said, starting with measurements lets them learn the rules before they break them. But forcing exactness can kill the joy and instinct that makes family food special.
