Proving my own work history took 14 months of pure nonsense

The SSA kept saying my old employer went out of business and couldn't verify my wages, but I found the W-2s in a shoebox from 2019 and sent them twice before a supervisor in the Chicago office finally looked at them. Has anyone else had to fight this hard just to get past step 3?

Honestly, the SSA has a job to do and if a company’s gone under, they can’t just take your word for it. A shoebox of W-2s is pretty flimsy proof without any matching payroll records, so I get why they made you jump through hoops. Maybe the real lesson is keeping digital copies with the tax filing software instead of relying on paper that could get lost.
