That $30 paint sprayer made my kitchen look like a dalmatian

Rented a Wagner sprayer from Home Depot in Tucson to repaint my 12x14 kitchen, figured it would take one afternoon instead of three. The thing started spitting clumps of paint right out of the gate, and by the time I shut it off I had white speckles on the cabinets, the floor, and my dog's back. Has anyone else had luck getting a clean finish with those things, or should I just stick to rollers for small rooms?
