Tried a cheap glass cutter from the big box store versus my old Fletcher

The box store one just chipped the edge on a 36-inch piece of 1/4 inch tempered, but the Fletcher ran smooth as butter. I wasted a whole sheet learning that lesson. Anyone else have a tool they'll never cheap out on again?

Yeah, that line about it paying for itself is so true. I mean, a cheap cutter just skates and chips, especially on longer cuts. With a good one, you get that clean score and a solid break every time. It's not just about saving the glass, it's about not having to redo the whole job.

Heard a framer say a good cutter pays for itself in saved glass alone.

That's an interesting point from your framer friend, robin_schmidt57. From what I've seen, a good cutter helps, but the real savings come from skill and careful planning. A novice with a top-end tool will still waste a lot of material. It seems like practice is the bigger factor in cutting down on broken glass.
