I used to think the 'cold seal' trick for punties was just shop talk nonsense.
A guy at the studio in Austin swore by it, and after my third punty popped off a heavy vase blank, I tried his method of barely touching the hot glass to the cold rod. It held perfectly. Anyone have other weird, counterintuitive tricks that actually work?

Stick a wet newspaper on your bench next to the glory hole for a quick chill pad. Sounds nuts, but that damp spot cools punties and handles way faster than just air, stops heat creep from popping them loose. Learned that one after a big platter took out a shelf because the punty gave up. The cold seal trick is real, but sometimes you need to fight the heat trying to sneak back up the rod.

Oh man, that wet newspaper trick is genius for stopping heat creep. I've used a damp cloth on my bench for the same reason, and it totally saves a piece from dropping. Burns.patricia knows that sudden shelf loss is the worst kind of surprise, right?

Been there with the runaway heat, it's the worst.
