My grandma's 'secret' in her prune cake was just a jar of baby food

Everyone in my family swore it was a special spice blend, but I found her 1972 recipe card that just says 'one jar of plum baby food' in the batter. It explains why my aunt's 'authentic' version always tastes like sawdust. Did anyone else's relatives hide weird shortcuts in their 'famous' recipes?

Check the back of old spice jars for notes.

Why would you even want to do that? It sounds like a total waste of time looking for something that probably isn't there. I'd rather just use the spices and cook something good.

Oh man, that's brilliant! My mom's famous chili had a note on the back of the paprika tin that just said "add ketchup". Those old notes are like little time capsules.
