My hard stop on trimming foundered horses without a vet's okay
I walked away from a job last week because the owner pushed me to trim a horse with clear founder signs, and that's just not right.

That vet seminar last month showed a case where trimming made the founder way worse.

The Equine Veterinary Journal had a piece last year that said trimming too soon can slow down healing. It showed several cases where early trimming made the lameness much worse. Now many vets stress waiting until the foot is more stable.

Honestly seems like every new study just flips the script. Tbh how many cases are we talking about, one or two? Ngl it feels like sometimes these seminars pick the worst examples to make a point. Trimming has been standard practice forever, so it can't be that bad across the board. Maybe it depends more on the specific horse and how bad the founder is. Just feels like a bit of an overreaction to say it makes things way worse every single time.
