A client in Dallas told me she only uses bar soap on her face

She came in for a facial last month and her skin was really tight and flaky. I asked about her routine, and she said she washes with a basic bar of soap twice a day because it gets her 'squeaky clean.' I explained how that strips the skin's natural oils, but she was firm that her way worked fine for her. Has anyone else had a client stick to a method you know is hurting their skin?

My aunt in Phoenix did the same thing with that pink soap from the drugstore. Her face looked like a dried-up riverbed, all cracked and red. She swore it was the only thing that cut through her makeup after work. I finally got her to try a gentle cleanser by buying it for her as a gift. She admitted after a week that her skin didn't feel like it was screaming anymore. Why do people think that painful tight feeling means clean?

My mom used that same pink soap for twenty years and called it her holy grail. I finally got her to switch by showing her my own routine, which never leaves my skin tight. @noah326 your story about your aunt is so familiar. It took me forever to unlearn that squeaky clean feeling meant I'd stripped my skin raw. Now I know if my face feels tight after washing, I've actually done more harm than good. It's a hard habit to break because that feeling is so linked to the idea of being really clean.
