Had a door operator gearbox let go on a 15-year-old Otis unit last Tuesday

The whole thing started making this awful grinding noise right as the car was leveling. I mean, it sounded like a bag of rocks. Ended up having to pull the motor and replace the whole gear set, which took most of the afternoon. Anyone run into a lot of these failing right around the 15-year mark lately?

Nah, I gotta push back on the whole "grease dries out" thing being the main culprit. That's way too simple. Seen plenty of boxes with good grease that still grenade themselves. The real issue is the constant micro-shocks from door reversals over a decade and a half. It fatigues the metal, full stop. Replacing just the bearings is a band-aid if the gear teeth are already stressed. You did the right thing swapping the whole set.

Seen a few of those lately. The grease dries out and the bearings go first. Good call replacing the whole gear set.
