Random neighbor told me I was watering my lawn wrong, tried it and it worked

So my neighbor Dave flagged me down last Tuesday while I was hosing down the front yard and said I was just wetting the grass instead of getting water down to the roots. He told me to water for 20 minutes straight every 3 days instead of 5 minutes every evening. I gave it a shot for two weeks and my lawn actually looks greener and I'm using way less water overall. Has anyone else had someone change their whole routine with one piece of advice like that?

Totally feel you on this. Had an old guy at the hardware store tell me to water my tomatoes deep and slow instead of just sprinkling them and it completely changed my garden. It's wild how the smallest tip from a stranger can make such a big difference.

Doesn't deep watering just encourage roots to stay shallow anyway since they'll always find the moisture?
