Took me 3 hours to figure out why my mud was bubbling on every joint
I was working on a ceiling patch in a basement in Aurora last Tuesday and no matter what I did, the mud kept bubbling up. I tried thinning it down, different knives, everything. Turns out the previous guy had sealed the drywall with some kind of oil-based primer and I didn't even think to check. Anyone else run into mystery coatings that ruin a smooth finish?

Oil based primer will fight you every time. I learned that one the hard way doing a bathroom remodel a couple years back. The mud just sat on top like water on wax. You gotta sand the hell out of it or just use a bonding agent before you start. Once you know the trick it's easy but man it's frustrating when you're three hours in and nothing's sticking right.

That "sits on top like water on wax" thing you said @colemiller is exactly what I ran into once. I remember reading somewhere that shellac based primer can cause the same issue too, not just oil based. Had a buddy tell me he used a bonding agent and it worked way better than trying to sand all that slick stuff off. Wish I'd known before I wasted a whole evening scraping and redoing a small bathroom ceiling.
