Feel your pain, but I see it the other way. That custom work proves you can solve their real problem, not just pick a part. The catalog option might not handle the weird load or fit the space right. I'd show them a side-by-side sketch of why their idea could fail. Sometimes you have to save the client from themselves, right?

Ugh, I get that logic but it feels risky... What if the sketch just makes them dig in harder? I've had clients take that as a challenge and double down on the cheap option. Then you're stuck fixing their mess later for free.
