Caught myself sanding drywall joints wrong for 2 years until a pro laughed at me at Lowes

I was doing the little back and forth motion like I was polishing a car. Some older guy walks by, stops, and goes 'son you're just making divots'. Showed me to go with the seam, long smooth strokes. My walls finally look flat. Anyone else have a basic technique click way later than it should have?
