Just realized I was clamping book spines all wrong for 5 years, spine glue was pooling

I do a lot of rebinds, mostly fantasy paperbacks that fall apart. Always used those big C-clamps to hold the text block while the glue dried. Last weekend I went to a bookbinding meetup in Portland and this older lady watched me work, then asked why my spine edges looked so bulgy. She showed me how she uses just a thin piece of wax paper and lighter pressure, lets the glue wick into the folds naturally. I checked my last 12 rebinds and every single one has that ugly ridge on the hinge. Anyone else ever had a 'no duh' moment like this, or is there a better clamp trick I'm still missing?
