Glue vs. tape for rebinding, I went old-school and paid for it

I rebind old paperbacks for fun, and for the last year I'd been using heat-set tape because it's fast. Last month I decided to do my 1968 copy of a sci-fi anthology with proper PVA glue and a cloth spine like I did in the 90s. The glue job took two evenings and one real mess on my kitchen table, but the book opens flat and feels solid. The tape version would've been done in 20 minutes, but it cracked after six months on another book I did. Anyone else stuck with old methods just because they feel more honest, even when newer stuff works fine?

I saw a conservator on a podcast say PVA is basically what libraries use for a reason, so you're not just being old-fashioned. That cracked tape on the other book would've bugged me way more than the glue mess, honestly.
