Unpopular opinion: banking in Lisbon almost broke me and it took 11 days to fix
Opened a Portuguese bank account last month because my landlord in Lisbon only takes direct debit. Nobody warned me the process needs a tax number, a proof of address, and an in person visit just to start it. The app then locked me out twice and support only answered by phone between 9 and 11 in the morning. Took 11 days total before the first payment cleared, and I was paying cash for everything that whole stretch. Has anyone found a bank here that lets you finish the whole thing online without the branch visit?
I read somewhere that most Portuguese banks still make you show up in person for the first account, something about the ID rules. Activobank is the one people keep bringing up for doing it all online. Might be worth a look before you deal with that phone window again.
