TIL the coworking space in Medellin charges $9/hour but the cafe next door is $4 for the whole day if you buy two coffees
I have been in Medellin for about 5 weeks now and was paying for a hot desk at one of the big coworking spots in El Poblado. Then one morning the wifi went down at the coworking place and I wandered into a small cafe two doors down called Cafe Velez. I ordered two tinto coffees for about $4 total and sat there for six hours with solid wifi and nobody bothered me. The owner even came over and showed me which outlet on the wall by the window has the best power and told me Tuesdays are quiet because the bakery next door is closed. Now I go there most days and save about $170 a month compared to the coworking pass. The only catch is no meeting rooms, so I walk to the park for client calls. Has anyone else found a regular cafe that beats their old coworking spot? Would love to know how you handle calls without getting weird looks.
I used to roll my eyes at the cafe crowd, figured you were just mooching off a small business owner who needed the table turnover. But after reading this I'll admit I had it backwards, since the guy basically gave you a power outlet tour and a heads up on quiet days, which is more service than most coworking spots bother with. My old place charged me extra for a locker and the front desk acted like printing a label was a personal favor. Sounds like you found something better and cheaper, so good on you for actually talking to the owner instead of just camping out.
