Spent 6 weeks in Chiang Mai before figuring out the visa extension mess
Honestly, I thought I had it all figured out when I landed. My 30 day stamp was fine, I had a hostel booked, and my remote work schedule was set. But then the 30 days were almost up and I realized I needed to extend or cross a border, and every blog post said something different. I spent 6 weeks there total, and it took me until week 5 to finally sit down at the immigration office in Chiang Mai and learn that my specific passport needed a different form than the one everyone online mentioned. The queue was brutal, 3 hours just to ask a question. Has anyone else had a country's rules change mid-trip and catch them off guard?

That "3 hours just to ask a question" part is what gets me, because a lot of embassies quietly post rule updates on their own sites weeks before blogs catch up. In my experience it's worth checking the official immigration page for that country right before you go, your mileage may vary though.
