Question about layering shadows in digital painting after a bad experience at a gallery opening last Saturday
I went to a small gallery opening in Portland last Saturday and watched a digital artist talk about her process for 40 minutes. She pulled up her files and showed that she keeps every shadow on its own layer instead of painting them flat, and the depth in her prints was nothing like what I get. I have been flattening my shading for 3 years because it felt faster, and seeing her work up close convinced me to switch. Now I am rebuilding an old piece with separate layers for core shadows and cast shadows, and the difference is already clear. Does anyone here have a layer setup they swear by for shadows, or do you just paint them straight onto one layer?
