Update: the salvage yard in Tulsa tried to sell me a water pump with a cracked housing
I was at a salvage yard off I-44 in Tulsa last Wednesday hunting a water pump for a 2012 Cummins. The counter guy swore the unit came off a runner with 88k miles and wanted $140 cash. I flipped it over and found a hairline crack near the weep hole, plus dried orange coolant crust in the bearing area. I pointed it out and he shrugged and said they all look like that. That is not true. A cracked housing will dump coolant into the bearing and kill the pump in a few thousand miles, if it even lasts that long. Anybody else seeing salvage yards push junk like this, or did I just hit a bad one?
