Best week ever with my old Rio Karma, then it died on Friday

Last Tuesday my 2003 Rio Karma sync'd perfectly with my ancient XP laptop, all 20GB of playlists loaded like it was 2005, but Friday it started clicking and now it won't spin up. Is the hard drive worth trying to swap, or should I just accept that some dead tech should stay dead?
