Update: I thought the old Hawthorne Mall in Vernon Hills was just a boring dead building until I walked it myself
A buddy kept telling me the Hawthorne Mall closed in 2021 and was worth a look, but I figured it was just another empty box with nothing to see. Then I parked near the old Sears entrance off Route 60 and saw the whole center court ceiling still lit up like it was waiting for a Sunday crowd. Sears moved out back in 2018 and the last few stores held on until the lease ran out, which is why the food court signs are still bolted to the wall. Has anyone gotten inside the old anchor wing, and did the power still work when you went?
Walked the old anchor wing with my buddy last spring and he almost tripped over a pallet of ceiling tiles still sitting there from whoever did the last fix up. Power was half on, like one row of lights near the Sears entrance worked but the back hall was pitch black, so we used our phones. He kept joking the place felt like a level in a video game where the lights cut out on purpose. Freaky part was the old store room door was propped open with a wet floor sign, and nobody had been in there in years. Told him we should've brought a real flashlight instead of just our phones.
