Why does nobody talk about how confusing e-ink screen specs actually are?

I keep seeing people argue that the original Kindle Keyboard from 2010 has better contrast than the newer models, but I swear my old one looks washed out compared to my wife's Paperwhite from 2015. Is it just the lighting or did Amazon actually change the screen tech in between those 5 years without saying anything? I tested them side by side in my living room with a desk lamp at the same angle and the difference was pretty big. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just seeing things?
