DAE change their mind about old hardware after a serial port saved my bacon?
I always rolled my eyes at the people who hoard old laptops and insist the old ports still matter. Last Tuesday I needed to pull logs off a 1998 CNC controller at a shop in Canton, and the only thing that would talk to it was a real RS-232 port. My USB adapter showed up in two days and did nothing, so I dug out a beige Dell from a closet shelf and had the log file in about 11 minutes. That little clunker did more than $60 of new gear could, and I admit I was the smug one. So now I'm wondering, what old port or cable has saved your hide when nothing modern would work?
