Soldered my first board with a $12 iron, redid it with a $60 one and the difference was wild
I built a 65% board back in March using a cheap iron from a big box store and half my joints looked like little gray blobs. When I switched to a temp controlled iron set at 350C the solder flowed into shiny cones almost every time and my stabs stopped feeling mushy. Is it just me or does anyone else think the iron matters way more than the switches for a first build?
Man, I gotta push back on this one. A temp controlled iron is nice and all, but 350C is way too hot for most through hole work and you're gonna lift pads if you're not careful. Half the guys building boards on YouTube are still using the same $15 fire stick they bought years ago and their joints look fine because they learned how to tin the tip and heat the pad first. The iron helps, sure, but knowing how to actually solder matters way more than what's in your hand.
