A writing prompt about a locked door gave me 11 stories, but half my group said it was too vague
I ran a prompt last Tuesday at our library meetup in Boise that just said "write about a door you can't open" and got 11 totally different stories from 14 people. Six of them loved it because the blank space let them go anywhere, and one guy wrote a whole thing about his grandma's attic. But four people said it was lazy and that a real prompt needs a character and a problem built in. I get both sides, I mean a vague prompt can feel like the writer is doing all the work. So which camp are you in, do you want prompts that hand you a whole situation or ones that just drop one image and walk away?
Reminds me of this time our fishing trip got rained out and we just sat in the truck for two hours talking about nothing. Best conversation of the whole summer and we never even touched a pole. Sometimes the empty space is where the good stuff happens.
