Warning: tried a 60 degree basket hitch on a roof truss and it almost went bad
Last week on a job in Bakersfield I was setting 8 roof trusses with a 30 ton boom truck. I figured a 60 degree basket hitch would hold better, so I went with it. I had 2 nylon slings rated for 8,000 lbs each, but the angle cut the capacity way down. When I lifted the first truss, the load shifted because I did not have a tagline on it. The truss swung about 4 feet to the side and my spotter yelled at me to stop. Nobody got hurt and the truss did not fall, but it scared the daylights out of me. What I learned is that load angle matters more than I thought, and I should always check the chart in the rigging book before trying something new. Has anyone else had a close call with basket hitches on long loads, and how do you keep the load from spinning?
