I finally admitted that 90s Image comics are actually good reads and not just fancy covers

Spent two hours last night actually reading my old Spawn #1 instead of just flipping through it and realized I've been missing the whole point for 25 years, anyone else have a comic they judged by the art alone?

That whole era of comics got written off for exactly that reason. People saw the Liefeld feet and the pouches and just assumed there was nothing underneath. But if you actually sit down with early WildCATS or even Gen13 it's got real character stuff mixed in with all the grit. Sam Kieth's early work on The Maxx showed that Image artists could actually tell weird personal stories too. The industry just remembers the bad anatomy jokes and forgets that guys like McFarlane and Lee were building something different than Marvel or DC at the time.
