Can we talk about the fact that 1 in 4 CNC guys will lose a finger or worse on the job?
I was reading a safety report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health last week and it said around 44,000 machining related injuries happen every year in the US alone. That stat hit me hard because I've been running a Haas VF-2 for 6 years and got way too comfortable reaching in to clear chips while the spindle was still winding down. Last month a guy at a shop over in Rockford lost two fingertips on a lathe because he bypassed the door interlock to save 20 seconds. I started using a chip hook and a pair of long forceps every single time now. Has anyone else changed how they clear chips after hearing something like this?
